Linoleic (Omega 6) and Alpha-Linolenic (Omega 3) are called essential fatty acids because they are essential to normal cell structure and they must come from the diet because our body cannot manufacture them. There is increasing evidence that the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 in the diet plays a crucial role in the development of many degenerative diseases.
There are several plant oils available that provide some essential fatty acids: Borage, Primrose,
Safflower, and Flax. Some oils, such as Flax and Safflower lack Omega 6. Borage and Primrose do not contain
Omega 3. One oil, Blackcurrant Seed Oil, appears to provide a balanced profile of all the essential fatty
acids including: Linoleic, Linolenic, Alpha Linolenic, and Gamma Linolenic.
